How to Write an Effective Abstract For a Research Paper

How to Write an Effective Abstract For a Research PaperAbstracts are a kind of paper that presents the topic of a research project and draws the attention of the reader. It is a basic method used in academic writing. In a thesis, the subject matter and the purpose of the research are covered, which makes it easy for the reader to understand the ideas of the author and look into the study method. In a research paper, the topic is always the same, but the approach and the research methodology vary depending on the type of paper. In a research paper, the goal is to provide the reader with an idea about the subject being researched. This information should be clear enough to be comprehended by the reader, and the abstract of the paper should be easy to read and give the reader an idea on what they should expect to find out in the research process. The aim of an abstract is to persuade the reader to read more, hence, it should be informative and based on the topic of the paper itself. In o rder to achieve this, there are certain things that one needs to keep in mind while writing an abstract.Firstly, the topic of the research paper must be properly planned. Before writing the abstract, one must always be clear about the purpose of the paper. Different papers have different purposes, some for recognition, some for recommendation, some for publication and some to motivate the student. The author must be clear about the nature of the research to be done, whether it will be for research or for publication. The topics chosen to write abstracts are dependent on the school or university that the student is in.Secondly, the topic of the research paper should be well-defined. In order to do this, one should conduct a research on the subject matter or study. Sometimes, the writer of the abstract, without the knowledge of the topic of the paper, may go to an encyclopedia or some other reference source to get some details about the topic that can be useful to be included in the a bstract.Thirdly, the author should be able to write an abstract in a way that it makes the readers want to read more about the subject. In academic writing, it is common to get bored with a subject, and this can be prevented if the author has already written enough about the subject. Therefore, the reader wants to know more about the topic so that he or she can get engaged in the research.Fourthly, the abstract should be organized and easy to read. A sentence or two should tell what the reader expects to find out in the research paper. If the researcher has already discussed the basics of the paper, then it is possible that the reader may get confused, therefore, it is necessary to include some sort of content here.Fifthly, the key phrases should be clearly defined. These are the words that would make the audience understand what the research paper is all about. Moreover, the focus of the paper should be clearly indicated so that the reader can decide if he or she needs to continue to read the paper or not. The key phrases should be simple and clear, thus, should be incorporated in the writing of the abstract. Finally, it is important to know the structure of a research paper before actually writing it. One should know when and how to break up a section into smaller pieces so that it is easier to comprehend at a later stage. Aside from this, the length of the abstract should also be determined and if possible, should not exceed a few hundred words.
